A C47 from the past!

Subject: An Interesting Coincidence

Max and Eddie,

A good friend of mine and former docent at the NASM, was reviewing my latest book and

came across this C47 picture with the tail number as shown. The

picture was taken in 1949 on the occasion of a parade at Fassberg air

base to honor those men who had died during the airlift. I am 13

years old and wearing my best outfit – army summer pants, a half

sweater knitted for me by my mom, and so on. Al … looked at the tail number and

thought, let me see what I can find. Well, to my great amazement he

found that this aircraft had participated in the D-Day landings, later

on in Market Garden, the doomed thrust through Holland designed by

Montgomery which was guaranteed to end the war weeks earlier, which it

didn’t. Then this same aircraft, now owned by the Danes participated

in the making of the movie on Market Garden, and now can be viewed at

a Danish air museum. When I leaned against the elevator I had no idea

what a veteran this aircraft was. At the time the C-54 was flying

coal to Berlin out of Fassberg, and these aircraft were used as

couriers or just to get from one place to another. If you need a

filler, this is a good one I think. cheers, wolf

For the 1,000th time — YOU’RE HIRED!

Great story! Thanks. I do get a kick out of it.

Was there a tail number on the sorry drab DC-3 parked next to your

friend’s?

If you’re looking for another hour of Veterans Air — I have 4 YouTubes

just loaded that I’m not putting out on a Post until later this week. I

told Harry they were safe in my YouTube library — except from you!!!

You once-again proven intelligence sleuth. Make a stupendous title for

your Memories book!

Night!
