Hi Gaye,

Your article about your dad’s airline will be running in the March 2023
issue of AIRWAYS, available on newsstands next month (February).
I have finished my initial edit (attached). I switched out of your
present-tense narrative after the second paragraph because it just
wouldn’t work for the entire article.

It will now be subjected to the scrutiny of yet another editor, then to
the proofreader, then it will come back to me. If you have any issues
with the article in its current form please let me know ASAP.

I’m glad that we will finally see this in print, distributed to 65
countries around the world.

All the Best for 2023,

David

Hi, David.
Delighted with the publication date. Thanks, again. Returning this a
quickly as possible. I used this edit tool once or twice, but years
ago, so I hope I’ve done it properly.

Of any of the edits (and there are only few), re-inserting a headline
about LEGACY that you deleted is important to me. It’s at the bottom of
Page 4. The other edits are switches to past tense, three typo
corrections, deleting the word “then” because it was used in the
previous sentence, etc.

And I’ve made this last suggestion because it appeals to me that the
reader not be sure until the end that the writer is Gravely’s daughter.
By Gaye Lyn Gravely… Suggest moving the BY line to the end

How are the images doing?

Happy 2023 and Beyond.

David, hi,
Thank you for the updates.
I appreciate your effort to grant my request…and I don’t mean to drive
you crazy…but Gaye Lyn Gravely as author is much more important to me
than trying to surprise the reader. IF you can put my full name back
where it belongs, please do.

What is the actual status on the images? Are you trying to find decent
non-VAE photos as substitutes? What can I do to help? You’re kind of
scaring me.

My best,

Gaye

Hi Gaye,
I made your requested changes and added LEGACY back in.
There are set rules for the magazine, such as numbers from one through
nine are spelled out, while 10 and higher are written as numbers
(numerals). Pilot, Flight Attendant, Mechanic, etc., are always to start
with a capital letter… and the author’s name plus direction to photo
credits appear on the title page. I have compromised with you and
changed the author’s name on the title page to, simply, G. Gravely.

Sadly, many people never look at the author’s name anyway.
Now to scrape together enough decent images.
All the Best,
David

Hi Gaye,
Photos and other images are an important part of a magazine article
because a lot of people will look through a magazine at a newsstand and
buy it based on the photos they see. They may have every intention of
reading the text, but they never get around to it. Thus, I believe that
a story always has to be told a second time through the images and
captions.

I’ve pulled several images from your website. Unfortunately, since we
don’t have many Veterans aircraft photos, I have to rely on things like
the wings and badges from Charles Quarles and the timetable from Craig
Morris.
If you have any additional images that we can use – that are not on your
website – let me know.

All the Best,
David
