Subject Archive for the Veterans Air story
Alexandra, hello. We meet again for the first time.
The research on my Dad’s 1945 non-sked air line, Veterans Air Express,
is winding down. I expect to discontinue the project during next year
and believe now’s the time to look for a home for the story’s data that
I have gathered.
A quick update. It was in July this year that you recommended the
Newark Archives Project and the Wayback machine when Dr. Blomstrom
reached out to the director of your library on behalf of my non-sked
research project. I was seeking guidance on my “next steps,”
specifically because I was concerned that the absence of any copyrights
would weaken, interfere with or disqualify my project from acceptance by
any reputable archive.
I touched base with Dr. Blomstrom again this week. My question and the
timing, prompted her to suggest that I contact you directly or she would
be happy to do so again on my behalf. I appreciate the chance to
communicate with you, so here I am to discuss Embry-Riddle’s Non-sked
project.
I believe Dr. Blomstrom notified you that I did contact the Newark
Archives Project. Alex, your suggestion was spot-on. Gail Malmgreen’s
review of the Veterans Air website was unexpectedly thoughtful,
informative and lengthy. And her response about my copyright concerns
was a huge relief. Frankly, I was stunned by the depth and tone of her
professional appraisal – and highly complimented by it.
Among many valuable topics, you both have emphasized the importance for
me, (in your words), to include source citations and copyright
information when she can. Gail felt, due to the “non-commercial use” of
my research, it would not pose copyright problems…but you do need to
standardize your presentation and your credits to sources. You need to
re-envision the web site as a useful resource for historians (both
amateur and professional) — and there are a lot of them out there.
While I doubt I grasp the enormity of my “source citations” and “credits
to sources,” I hope my web designer’s recently discovered website app
that “formats footnotes” will greatly reduce the terror, if not the
time, associated with my properly adding credits.
Alex, that’s enough background. The reason for this email is to ask for
Embry-Riddle’s consideration to archive the Veterans Air Express story. The
files, photos, etc. may be a year out from being “ready,” but I believe
the research is far enough along now for me to present the subject. I
don’t know the process or criteria, and, as I expressed to Dr. Blomstrom
on Monday… I have no idea of the possibility, but I’d be foolish not
to inquire…given all the assistance, time, opened doors, and valuable
effort the Veterans Air story has benefited from so many corners of your
University.
My Dad and his crews would be proud for their story and the non-sked era
to be available for further research through association with your
Non-sked project. Needless to say, so would I.
Let me know if we should talk, Alex. I thank you for the turning-point
help you’ve already provided.
My best,
g.
