Subject: Picture for your research on Veterans Airlines
Hello Gaye,
My brother, Craig, forwarded to me your original email and the
subsequent correspondence you have had with him regarding the
involvement of my late father (Richard N. Broughton) with Veterans
Airlines after WWII.
Here is a picture and accompanying article I have of my Dad and others
that apparently appeared in the Newark Star Ledger after a flight that
was made to Prague. As noted in the caption, my Dad is kneeling at the
far left. If you would like me to send the picture in its actual size, I
can probably do that but the file size is much larger (1.1 MB). My
brother will likely find additional pictures.
I have enjoyed looking at the website you have assembled. It sounds like
doing the research for this project has been very interesting and
rewarding for you.
If I can answer other questions or if you’d just like to chat, please
feel free to contact me.
Both my brother and I would love to meet you sometime. I saw that you
live in Santa Fe. I will likely be attending the Albuquerque Balloon
Fiesta…perhaps i could take a trip from there over to Santa Fe and we
can get together. Or if you’re ever going to be near Kentucky, let me
know…My brother lives in Florida (not far from where my parents lived
after my Dad retired from the Air Force in 1969).

Robert, good morning!
I am so pleased to hear from you. Thank you for the warm and
encouraging message. AND THE PHOTO! I’ve not read either the caption
or the article yet. The photo just stopped me. It is so fabulous. I
have never come across it, so you’ve sent me treasure. Yes, I would
love a digitized version of the photo. Even though it’s 1.1 MB, you
should be able to attach and send it via email. When you have a moment,
give it a try. Any photos that you and Craig are able to share will be
greatly appreciated. They just add so much to our stories.
Just so you know, the flight departed Prague on Monday, April 22, and
landed at Newark on Tuesday, April 23, 1946.
As you may have read on my site, I’ve just recently made contact with
two more of Dad’s crew members – Thomas Cowart, 94, living in South
Carolina, flight engineer, and Ed Martz, 90, living in New Jersey,
navigator. They may BOTH be in that photo! because they flew the first
Prague trip with your Dad. Thomas told me on Wednesday (do you realize
how amazing it is for me to be able to make that statement?!) that he
was seldom in photos because he was responsible for the aircraft and was
usually tending it. So with some luck, this photo is the exception.
The man kneeling next to your Dad is, I believe, Captain Morgan Cooper
Walker. And the man in the middle, standing, with the suit & tie is
likely the UNRRA Observer who accompanied the flight, Ed Katz. Again,
thank you for sending this. And bless your Grandmother’s heart for
clipping it!
Next Tuesday I leave for South Carolina to meet Thomas and on to New
Jersey to meet Ed and his family. Exciting. Between the two of them,
they may be able to ID the rest of the chaps in that photo. I love the
fact that any photos I do have show happy smiling faces. I do believe
your Dad and the other men were loving what they were doing!!!!
I’ll be in NJ six days and will do additional research. The Star-Ledger
and Newark Public Library are on my list to scour through their
archives, most likely microfiche. Aviation Hall of Fame at Teterboro.
And a few others.
By all means, Robert, we’d love to get together whenever you’re anywhere
in the neighborhood. The balloon fest or any other time. Come along,
brother Craig!!! We’ll make it a family affair.
Thank you again, Robert. I would love to speak with you. Tell me best
time to call. Or it may be easier for you to call me given your
schedule.
My best to you both!
g.
