Subject Some possible questions
I write you from Jacksboro, TX. Last night, the TX B-B-Q did not
disappoint. And tonight just north of Dallas, I’ll be part of a pizza
party with two Veterans Air families – Noll and Chambers. I will ask
them what they believe is important to know about the airline and their
dads’ roles in it. Meanwhile, here are some questions that came to my
mind as the miles rolled by yesterday:
- Your dad was only 22 when he got out of service after World War II.
- What gave him the idea to start an airline? What was its genesis?
- What were the men and women like who joined Veterans Air?
- From what you’ve learned, what would you say was their biggest accomplishment?
- As you know, our Embry-Riddle student research focuses on the Non-sked era. Was Veterans Air Express affected by it? If so, how?
- In the end, what happened to the airline?
- What else? What would your dad have wanted us to know?
- If they had had more time, were there plans for the future?
- In your current day research, you found some of your dad’s men and their families. What was that like? And what did you learn about their lives after Veterans Air?
- What did your dad do afterwards? Did he stay in aviation?
I hope these are in line with the nature of your students’ project, Sally. I’m eager to see their questions. If it would help, I can send key points I would discuss for each of mine.
I look forward to your feedback. And most especially to meeting you in
two weeks. I have invited my husband Harry to join me in Atlanta and
travel at least as far south as Boynton Beach to meet Marilyn Gries,
Robert’s widow. Harry celebrates all my Veterans Air discoveries and is
tremendously supportive of my research – even the solo cross-country RV
trips!! It helps that he was an air traffic controller in the Air Force
& loves airplanes, but his encouragement goes much deeper than that.
Lucky me! (If possible, I know he’d love to visit your campus.)
My best,
Gaye Lyn
