Dear Reader,
These three email exchanges were five months into my now 11 year Veterans Air research. Not an excuse, but perhaps an understandable mistake given the to-be-determined further details regarding the first UNRRA Warsaw flight. In the 9/13/2015 email below, *I incorrectly state that “I already know that Captain Walker & Copilot Broughton led the first Warsaw UNRRA flight.” In fact, the official U.S. Immigrations Crew Manifest for that flight never did surface. Our correct information surfaced later through New York Times coverage that ” Captain William Jakeman and First Officer Jack Stettner along with five other crew members completed” the flight. Details were further provided in Jack Stettner’s Logbook.
You’ll find one of the stories at veteransair.org/1st-warsaw-unrra-war-relief-flight-makes-history

Subject: Stumbled on feature story
Dear Team,
I just stumbled upon a feature story in FLYING December 1946 with four
incredible photos of Veterans Air Lines and identification of 4 of our
Transatlantic crew members handsomely attired in uniform. (*From other
media coverage, I already know that Captain Walker & Copilot Broughton
led the first Warsaw UNRRA flight; now I have two NEW identified members
– Navigator G. A. Roland and Flight Engineer T. Cowart).
The article title is THE NON-SKEDS by L. S. Willis starts on page 45 and
runs for several pages.
I’ve already written to Byrd Aviation Books to see if they have a copy
of the magazine. (Paul, this is a connection you found for me.)
They’re my inexpensive “go-to” source.
I’m dancing! And had to share it.
My best,
g.

Gaye,
And hopefully you asked for permission to copy and use in the VA site?

Hi,
No, they cannot give permission. Only the publisher can. They are just
a re-sale site. They don’t have the magazine, but found it on ebay for
$13.99 – only one; spin looks a little abused, but given its age, it’s
great!
Permission is something I must learn about. For the time being, on the
site, I had been giving SOURCE info. Got a little lazy…but cannot
afford that. because even if the site isn’t getting much attention right
now, if I move forward into some sort of publication myself, or start
getting publicity for my efforts, I MUST SHOW SOURCES and understand
PERMISSION issues. I have done some research – not totally blank on the
subject. PHOTOS are a real issue however. one thing to paraphrase copy
– PHOTOS are different.
anyway, thanks for the nudge. You are MY CHIEF NUDGE WHAT IS …on a
lot of topics…and I DO appreciate it.
Gaye
