Gaye Lyn asks, “What’s next? What’s my research’s final venue? How do I start?”

Good day to you, Sally & Bill,

I spoke with Steve recently about “What’s next?” with my Veterans Air
research – in terms of final venue and format. He brought up footnoting,
“housing,” archives, digital materials, searchability, etc. Subjects
about which he felt I might call upon you both for advice. In fact, he
encouraged me to do so.

Here’s my motivation.

In 2015, there was no story. Just my idle curiosity. Once five of Dad’s
men and 11 families surfaced, I thought “The Story” was for them. Then,
although The Non-skeds seemed such an unknown entity, they actually
generated unexpected interest. And, finally, non-aviation, non-Non-sked
folks were expressing appreciation for the human interest stories. Nine
years later, I am convinced that this is something good, meaningful and
well done. Most importantly, The Story, their Legacy, deserves attention
and recognition.

That motivation brings me to you. Literally. What I would like to ask
you both, where I need help, is determining where and how do I start?
What should my first steps be? Where should they take me? And, beyond
Steve’s encouragement, I believe I couldn’t ask two more knowledgeable
and devoted people than you two to help me get started.

That’s what I meant to say in my voice mail.

It’s a big “ask.” I know. I am well aware of your lack of free time.
But my life makes my time adaptable. And short inputs will carry me a
long way. I promise to be a diligent student!

Please consider it.

My best always,

Gaye Lyn

Hi Gaye Lyn,

Thank you for your very interesting email. I am happy to ask some
questions that may (hopefully) be helpful.

You have already gathered a lot of information. What is the purpose of
your intended project? What do you want to accomplish? How will you
define success for the project?

What materials do you want to include? Artifacts from Veterans Air?
Photos? Audio recordings? Video recordings?

What projects have you seen that you would like to emulate? (Books,
article series, short videos, podcasts, etc.)

Who is the audience for your project? You probably have a varied
audience. I know you have already done work in this area. You might
think about what the audience needs to know in terms of background
information or framework so they are better able to understand the
interviews and stories. Here are some questions you might ask to build
the framework: What is the broader historical context? What research
do you need to do to lay the foundation of the historical context?
(What related events happened? What are the names of individuals
involved? What dates are important? What places are important? What
were the political issues at the time? What were the social issues?
Once you have all of the background information, what interpretation do
you need to provide?)

I could write more, but I fear this may seem overwhelming and that is
not my intent.

Warm regards,

Sally
