George Gracie Leu, among Veterans Air first 22.

A confession: In November, 2022, I spoke with Byron Leu – the son of George Gracie Leu. Today, among files, I found this saved photo…

George Gracie Leu, among the first 22 crew members of Veterans Air Express in 1946. And Advertising VP.

Plus, I had written these notes to remember details of our conversation – intended for a Post much sooner than April 2026.

I’m aghast not to have captured the rare event of contact with a Family member. But it’s never too late to acknowledge and share the memory of a Veterans Air member.

Working Three Months For Nothing

Today, vaguely recalling that George was mentioned in the July 1946 Air Transport article, I found and confirmed that George not only was among the first 22 to join Saunie’s Visionaries, he also filled the Advertising Vice President role.1 I’d often wondered who had taken on that challenge as the men claimed the work they felt suited them best.

Dear Reader, the article in Air Transport tells the Veterans Air story at a flourishing period in its history. I’ve rightly referred to it as “the bedrock of earliest research.” I’m taking liberties here to provide the entire article. And to provide its Citation a second time.2
