Hello,

This is my first day searching for specific information in your

Archives. I’ve gotten to a certain point – now don’t know how to

proceed to access the actual data.

Here’s where I am:

Civil Aeronautics Board [CAB]

Series General Records 1942 – 1957

Record Group 197

Actions Taken By Staff, 1948

NA Identifier 6528108

HMS/MLR Entry Number A1 21

National Archives at College Park – Textual Reference (RDT2)

Here is my research project:

It falls within 1945 – 1949 when my Dad founded an all-Veterans

non-scheduled cargo and passenger airline: Veterans Air Express [VAE]

and Veterans Air Line.

My objective is to learn and document findings about:

CAB rulings, regulations and actions of the period.

The official CAB Filings submitted by VAE in September 1945 and any

official exchanges between VAE and CAB.

Of greatest importance are the final circumstances, exchanges and

rulings when VAE ceased to exist in 1947-48. Financial Receivership?

Or possibly Loss of Registration due to illegal charter flights?

How do I look for those kinds of documents? Would apreciate your help.

I tried the phone number provided online 301-837-1752, but no one

answered.

Thanks so much. I must admit, your Archives are formidable! I’m eager

to get good at using them.

Best regards,

g.

Dear Ms. Lyn:

Thank you for contacting the National Archives and Records

Administration. This email is in response to your inquiry concerning

access to CAB filings and records pertaining to the Veterans Air Express

[VAE] and Veterans Air Line for the 1945-1949 time period.

These records are not available to view online but we took a look at

what you had cited: Actions Taken By Staff, 1948 in Box 1 of the

series, General Records, 1942-1957; Entry A1 21; Records of the Civil

Aeronautics Board, Record Group 197

<catalog.archives.gov/id/6282574> and were unable to locate a

reference to VAE or Veterans Air Line. Since the CAB records are not

indexed it requires extensive research to locate any materials. We find

that the database Hathitrust is helpful in providing information

beneficial to your research. www.hathitrust.org/

We searched Hathitrust on your behalf and were unable to locate

anything with the keywords “Veterans Air Line” but were successful in

locating information with “Veterans Air Express”. We identified Dockets

2412, 2413 and 2244 as relevant to VAE. Unfortunately, though, we could

not locate these dockets in the series: Selected Dockets, 1938-1984;

Entry A1 42; Record Group 197 <catalog.archives.gov/id/6434880>

. Your best course of action for proceeding with your research would be

to view the series: Notation Memorandums Relating to Board Actions,

1944-1968; Entry A1 37; Record Group 197

<catalog.archives.gov/id/7866944> . We identified that FRC

Boxes 2-6 at Stack 530/28/35/03-04 cover your time span of research. We

will be happy to make these records available to you or your

representative should you have an opportunity to visit NARA at College

Park. You could also hire a researcher to conduct research on your

behalf. A list of private researchers who are familiar with National

Archives facilities is available on our web site at

www.archives.gov/research/hire-help/index .Research room hours

are Monday-Friday, 9:00 am-5:00 pm. We are currently taking

appointment(s) through Eventbrite.

www.eventbrite.com/o/national-archives-at-college-park-textual-45638648793

. If you would like to make an appointment please do so through the

“Textual Research Appointment at Archives 2” selection. If you hire a

researcher they will need to make an appointment directly with us.

Also through our search of Hathitrust we uncovered the citation 76 F.

Supple 684 (D. C. N. J., 1948) in regards to Veterans Air Express.

Please see the copied and pasted information from Hathitrust below.

In re Veterans; Air Express; Co., Inc., 76 F. Supp. 684 (D. C. N. J.,

1948). (The prior lien of a Federal Government agency (RFC) on an

aircraft recorded in accordance with Sec. 503 of the Civil Aeronautics

Act takes precedence over a later possessory mechanics lien established

by state law.) …

Found here, as well:

babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015020939073&view=1up&seq=5&skin=2021

. We believe that there should be a reference to the Veterans Air

Express case on Page 684 of Volume 76 in the publication Federal

Supplement . Through WorldCat <www.worldcat.org/> you can

locate repositories that have this publication.

www.worldcat.org/search?q=%22Federal+Supplement%22&qt=results_page

Our best example of the Federal Supplement collection we could find

is from Marquette University’s Library catalog:

libus.csd.mu.edu/search~S1?/tFederal+Supplement/tfederal+supplement/1,12,12,B/frameset&FF=tfederal+supplement&1,1,/indexsort=-

.

Finally, since this case was heard in the District Court of New Jersey

there might be a record of it at the National Archives at New York City

<www.archives.gov/nyc> . Please see this link for additional

information and how to request these records:

www.archives.gov/nyc/public/courts.html#usdist .

We hope this information assists you in your research.

Sincerely,

AMY REYTAR
