Hi Gaye.

After looking through a few hundred pictures (for a project of my own)
it was time to do something else for a while.
Looking at your site seeing a lot of “unidentified,” I started to Google
a bit and ended up doing this for a couple of hours….

I used the names from your website and added “ , Pilot ”. I got a total
of 4 (5 actually) results, you may have seen some before and maybe not.
I hope it helps when there is a first for you in the following.

The first name seems very common, so this could be anything for anybody.

AL MARTIN, Pilot:

lubbockonline.com/stories/052807/loc_052807031.shtml#.VexGR8Lou71

Only this article, maybe you have seen it already, I don’t know if it is
of help. [Update: The above link is no longer active.  g. 3/8/2026]

For the name HUTSON and/or HUDSON I found references to books only….

DICK HUTSON, Pilot:[Confirmed as Richard F. Hutson, 11/2/2017, below.  g. 3/8/2026]

books.google.nl/books?id=wQEAAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA58&lpg=PA58&dq=dick+hutson,+PILOT&source=bl&ots=5vVzkf-PS0&sig=7yvRKMFghPgWM67rvfsp2aiWef4&hl=nl&sa=X&ved=0CFAQ6AEwBmoVChMIjY7JuNrixwIVhT0aCh2RigRS#v=onep…

It is an article from “Popular Science” from the 1970’s, perhaps
something to go on.

I also found a DICK HUDSON, Pilot (notice the D in Hudson):

books.google.nl/books?id=vMVt9mG7WMUC&pg=PA48&lpg=PA48&dq=DICK+HUDSON,+PILOT&source=bl&ots=bJ-Lq5hQcc&sig=-mRqa1l-zsFz8gVyvhKv10l9Xpo&hl=nl&sa=X&ved=0CEEQ6AEwBGoVChMIxpXitMXixwIVhQoaCh0tMwGs#v=onep…

He flew the Berlin Airlift, which started after Veterans closed down.
Maybe the library you mention on your site can help to find the
magazine/book, although I’m not sure what else is in it, or if they are
the Hutson/Hudson you are looking for.

For FREDERICK B. FOSTER, Pilot this came up:
www.emissourian.com/obituaries/obits/frederick-b-foster/article_3a74b575-8ed5-5bfd-b623-71cb1e53dfa8.html?mode=jqm

The order of things he did in his life is slightly off (Veterans after
Korea) but Veterans is clearly mentioned.

And finally, for ROBERT MONTANARELLA, Pilot I found two links:

www.aviationarchaeology.com/src/1950s/1950Oct.htm

www.accident-report.com/crews/alpha/namemom-mz.html

This is a puzzling one. I don’t think there are very many pilots with
the same name.
The link to Aviation Archeology gives him (about in the middle) as pilot
of a crashed C-47, 2 killed.
But the USAF serial mentioned does not exist (see below).
The second link has the same name also.

Regarding the USAF serial-number, there is a 42-100580 which was indeed
stationed at Floyd Bennett Field and according to “my book” it was with
unit 2230AFRTC.
But there is no mentioning of this aircraft ever having crashed, except
on the Archeology site.
Everything I checked on this C-47 42-100580 says it was sold to France.

Well, this should give you some homework after visiting all your
new-found friends, (I love those stories).

Good luck with your research, I’ll keep on following it.

Cheers,
Peter

Peter strikes again!!!!! Totally, totally amazing. I have only read
your email, not clicked on anything, but thank you, thank you!!! Only
Fredrick Foster do I probably have something on. I also found an obituary –
and family member.  We had many exchanges because she thought her F.F. was different than mine –
but it turns out they are the same. So I’ll be curious to see what you
found. My info had the Korean War time-confusion also – so it’s likely the
same obituary. Will look TOMORROW…which is when I’m starting afresh with
blocks of time for my project. I have been so frustrated with “the rest
of my Life” needing my time – but I have 2 more posts actually written
needing photos selected & sized & captioned and SEO’d.

Peter, you’ve energized my day! I cannot thank you enough. I’ll be
back to you on my results!

My best,
Gaye

Dear Reader, this is Gaye Lyn. It’s 3/8/2026.  I had forgotten about this email below from John Greenleaf, Jr. which he sent me two years earlier!!! It clearly confirms our VAE pilot to be RICHARD F. HUTSON.

Gaye Lyn, I just received the original of Dad’s VAE business card, and
hand-written on the back in pencil is:

Richard F. Hutson
1303 No. Broad St.
Hillside, NJ

EL5-1526

I assume this is Dick Hutson’s home address and phone number at the
time, and is probably pretty useless today, but I thought you might want
the historical info anyway.

Regards,
John
