Subject: Air Transport, Saturday Evening Post, and Business Week;Dear Gaye Gravely Pollitt,Carmelita and I enjoyed assisting you today at the New Mexico State Library. It was a pleasure meeting you. After further searching and speaking with another colleague we have come to the conclusion that we are unable to access the full-text articles from the 1940s that you requested for Air Transport, Saturday Evening Post, and Business Week; our database descriptions do not give us access that far back. I encourage you to contact the Santa Fe Public Library with these requests as they may have access to these earlier publications, and, if not, may be able to put in an ILL (interlibrary loan) request on your behalf to obtain them.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to us should you have further information needs.
Best regards,

Aubrey & Carmelita…thank you both so much. I enjoyed working with you as well and really appreciate your assistance while I was there and after.
As I go along, I will not hesitate to send in inquires to this website. And I will engage the SFPL for the older publication dates.
Thank you, again. You made the search fun and educational.

Dear Librarians. (Aubrey or Carmelita, is that you?)
You were very kind & helpful when I was last there. Cannot believe a full month has past.
I’d like to verify that the library subscribes to NewspaperArchive (newspaperarchive.com/advancedsearch) and that I would have access to it if I worked from the library?
Also, would that be a wifi-connection? Or would I need to use a library computer?
Thanks so much.

Hello Gaye.
Yes, you can use Newspaper Archive from within the State Library. If you use the library wifi or a library computer, you will have access.
Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

Thank you very much for the quick response, Laura.
I do have one two other questions at this moment:
Does the library subscribe to (either directly or included in a larger database) The New York Times that would include 1940 – 1955 articles that I would be able to scan or save on a “stick?”
Can you guide me about permission to excerpt from news articles if I give full credit to the source?
Currently, this would be for use on my website as I conduct my research and share my findings.
Further down the road, if the research warrants, it might be for publication (aviation media articles, a book, museum exhibit – I have no idea right now).
As background: I am researching an all-veteran, cargo/passenger commercial air service founded by my Dad, Saunie Gravely, in 1945. Veterans Air Express and Veterans Air Line were based at Newark Air Depot (as they called it back then) and Teterboro Airport (NJ). They were newsworthy (more so than I realized before I started my research) and I want to find as much of the press coverage as possible. I am telling their story and excerpting some of it on my website – www.VeteransAir.org – which I have created to chronicle and share my findings with as wide an aviation audience as I can generate. My objective is to find as many knowledgeable people as possible to confirm, verify, etc. my findings.
Sorry, Laura. That is likely a longer explanation than you needed. Perhaps, not.
Thank you,
g.

Gaye,
The New Mexico State Library does not have access to the NY Times from 1940-1955 in a searchable database format; however, we do have it on microfilm. If you know the page number / date of the article you need, it’s not too difficult to use. We have a microfilm scanner that creates PDF files. We have indexes to the NY times in hardcopy format.
To reprint or reuse a work under copyright requires the permission of the copyright holder, unless it’s fair use <copyright.gov/fair-use/more-info.html>.
