Sebring, short-lived Veterans Air maintenance base in FL, generated lots of press clippings – most with no newspaper names.

Good morning, Carole.

I am so tardy in sending my appreciation that I’m embarrassed…but

grateful is more important, so here I am. I want to thank you for your

hospitality the day Allen and I spread out in your office. The help

I’ve received from you both – and most especially because of your

long-term dedication to the records you gather, sort and tend – has been

fabulous.

Later today I will publish (finally) a Post on my site about Veterans

short-lived but important occupancy at Hendricks-becoming-Sebring air

field. I’ll send you the link and hope I’ve done the story justice. It

is certainly made more interesting by the photos from the local papers.

I’m doing my best to give “credit” in naming my sources. I’ve got a lot

to learn about keeping proper records.

I have a personal favor to ask, Carole – having nothing to do with

aviation. I really loved that quote hanging on your wall about I’m

going in search of myself . My memory can’t do it justice, but it sure

struck a chord with me. If you could type the text in an email, I’d

love to have it.

Hope this finds you well. Keep up the fantastic work. I really enjoyed

meeting you.

My best,

g.

Dear Gaye,

Thank you for the kind words. And here are the words that you requested:

“I’ve gone to look for myself. If I should return before I get back,

keep me here!”

These words of wisdom (?) are followed by a funny looking Dr. Seuss

character.

Best regards,

Carole, hi.

In my first email, I mentioned being ready to publish a Post on my

website about Veterans Air at Sebring. Turned out that my news clips

have dates, but not the newspaper source — which I need for proper

citation/credit. They may all be from The Highlands County News , but I

cannot make that assumption.

Right after I contacted you, Allen, for assistance, I felt guilty

bothering you with this, so I decided to research it myself. I

determined that the Sebring News-Sun is your current-day, surviving

paper. When I called, they connected me Ramona. Small world, she

referred me to you, Carole , explaining the paper turned over their

“bound” editions to the Historical Society when they began going

digital.

So…here I am. I just joined the Historical Society. I figured that’s

the least I can do for all the great information & photos your archiving

has provided. My question is can I use the online Archives to find the

newspapers that published these 5 specific articles? If not, I’d really

appreciate your help — if the info is readily available to you.

Final question…I have one article that refers to itself in the copy as

The American. Do you have any further info on them? Is/was that a

local Sebring publication?

Carole, thank you very much.

My best to you both,

g.

Dear Gaye Lyn,

To answer your questions:

First, No, there are no online Archives to find the newspaper (there was

just one) that published the articles copied below.

The name of the newspaper that published all of these articles was “The

Sebring American”, our local newspaper at the time. It should be noted

that during the months of April through approximately August of 1946,

that was the name of our newspaper; however it did change names later

on. But given these dates, it was called The Sebring American.

I trust this is of help to you. Also, I have no evidence of your joining

our historical society. Did you just mail out the check and information

today? Please clarify.

Thank you.

Carole
